Cenozoic of Brittany

An exhibition to discover from April 1 to December 20, 2019.

The Armorican Massif is mainly known for its acidic soils, in relation to the ancient rocks that constitute it. There are, however, some basins in which limestones have been exploited, sometimes since ancient times, for the construction of houses or the amendment of fields (Tréfumel, Le Quiou, Chartres-de-Bretagne, etc.).

These limestones were deposited during the last 55 million years when the sea covered Brittany, in temperate to subtropical climates. The exhibition traces the geological evolution of Brittany during this period when it was covered four times by warm, shallow waters and with a rich biodiversity (sharks, fishes, marine mammals, molluscs, crustaceans, etc.). We propose you to discover it from April 1 to December 20, 2019.
