Degrees offered

The training of students in a License (Bachelor’s) and Master’s program is very important for the development and readability of the research laboratory unit. This training draws on the expertise of the lecturers-researchers and researchers of Geosciences Rennes

The Environment pathway

The Environment course aims to provide skills in ecology, surface geology, physical and chemical hydrology, and soil sciences. It is mainly oriented towards the management of soil and water resources (surface and underground) as well as towards biodiversity and habitat management, to prepare for multidisciplinary approaches to environmental issues

  • Licence 1 - in portal "biologie, environnement, chimie du vivant" (BECV)
  • Licence 2 - environment (in charge : Vincent Jung / vincent [dot] jungatuniv-rennes1 [dot] fr)

Master’s degree with a specialization in Bio-Geosciences (Bio-Geo)

Master’s degree with a specialization in Bio-Geosciences (Bio-Geo)

  • The PPP track trains paleontologists, paleobiologists and persons involved with geoheritage in the fields of research, higher education, scientific mediation and the enhancement of the paleontological heritage.
  • The SVTU (Sciences de la vie, de la Terre et de l'univers - Life, Earth and Universe Sciences) track prepares future lecturers for the SVTU civil service examination (Agrégation), the highest teaching degree in Biology and Geology. This track replaces the preparation course for the Rennes SVTU civil service examination. This training is currently offered as a non-degree or degree option, something that is only found in Brittany. Since 2003, the results of this training rank it among the top 5 preparation courses in France for this competition (the first 2 are at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS)). It offers a combination of skills in geology/biology, which also means that students can enter into careers such as journalism and scientific events.

Master’s degree with a specialization in Water Sciences (Sciences de l’Eau - SE)
Person in charge : (Luc Aquilina / luc [dot] aquilinaatuniv-rennes1 [dot] fr)

  • The aim of the Master’s program is to train scientific managers specialized in the management of water and soil resources, the transport of elements and the management of natural environments from the surface to the soil and subsoil.
  • The Master’s program enables students to tackle water resource management from the quantity (physical), quality (chemistry) and habitat perspectives (ecology). The Master's courses are organized in such a way as to culminate in 11 career domains, identified based on the jobs held by former Geosciences students over the past 10 years: habitat management; environmental restoration; soil and sanitation; river management; water quality; polluted sites and soils; surface and groundwater; hydrogeology and geothermal energy; urban hydrology; network modeling; flow modeling.
  • Training through research using quantitative methods, a facet implemented in the courses, allows students to enter into professional life with a skill level equal to that of an engineer at the end of the Master's program or to pursue an applied or fundamental doctorate (PhD) degree. A digital 2nd year Master’s course (M2) is offered online, as part of a continuous training program. The goal of the double-degree in geo-engineering and the environment (GE) is for students to continue their studies with a doctorate (PhD) degree as part of the LIA RESO program (International Associated Laboratories - Resources and Societies), created with Quebec.

Master’s degree with a specialization in Earth, Planetary and Environmental Sciences (Sciences de la Terre, des Planètes et de l’Environnement - STPE)

Person in charge : (Kerry Gallagher / kerry [dot] gallagheratuniv-rennes1 [dot] fr)

  • The Master’s degree with a specialization in Earth, Planetary and Environmental Sciences (STPE) has a double objective: • to train engineers who are able to prospect, manage and/or work on natural resources in the surface and subsurface (water, hydrocarbons, mineral resources, deep waste storage, aggregates, geological mapping, etc.); • to train researchers (and lecturers-researchers) in the academic and/or industrial sectors by preparing them for the continuation of their studies with a doctoral (PhD) degree.
  • The CCI track is a M2 level course designed to strengthen the computer science and scientific programming skills of students who already have a M2 STPE degree and who would like to further develop a dual expertise for the job market.

The EGAAL Doctoral School (Ecology, Geosciences, Agronomy & Food Sciences)* is in charge of the doctorate (PhD) program in Earth Sciences at the Université Bretagne Loire

Teaching management

The teaching administration functions are ensured by Aline LE MERRER (OSUR) for the 1st and 2nd cycles, as well as the preparation for civil service examinations in teaching such as CAPES and Agrégation and for Master’s degrees.

These functions cover the organization and financial and administrative management of field courses and equipment specific to teaching (geophysical and hydrological techniques, etc.), in addition to the collection and processing of administrative information related to recruiting Master’s students.

aline [dot] lemerreratuniv-rennes1 [dot] fr (Aline LE MERRER) also manages the training Schedule.

Funding

The Geosciences-Rennes research laboratory unit and the entire Teaching team would like to thank the University of Rennes 1, the Region of Brittany and the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) who, through the funds disbursed for teaching, made it possible to buy several pieces of equipment used to help develop pedagogical learning in Earth Sciences.
