Presentation

Geosciences Rennes is a joint mixed research unit between the University of Rennes and the CNRS (UMR-6118). This Earth Sciences laboratory, which was initially working on the lithosphere, has expanded towards the Environmental Sciences by focusing the main themes on Earth Sciences. It has an original approach in that it focuses on processes that simultaneously integrate the geosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, at all spatial scales (nm to 1000 km), and from the current year to billions of years. The approach that gathers the laboratory revolves around observation, quantification, experimentation and modeling.

A general theme: Dynamics of continental envelopes and their interfaces, from the ground to the core

Five research topics correspond to 5 research teams:
 
  * The processes governing the production, transfer and reactivity of metallic trace elements as well as organic compounds at their interfaces.
  * The overall understanding of environmental systems integrating fundamental physical, chemical and biological processes with imaging of structures and couplings at different spatio-temporal scales and through numerical modeling.
  * Biodiversity-related processes, particularly exceptional preservations with ancient ecosystem reconstructions through lineages and evolutionary biodiversity processes.
  * Sedimentary paleoenvironments and their control factors (climate, deformation, etc.) at various temporal and spatial scales.
  * Lithosphere dynamics at the plate boundaries from the dating of events to processes controlling the deformation of the lithosphere.

A multidisciplinary unit with technical means

The evolution of the research topics is based on strong disciplinary expertise in historical disciplines such as tectonics, deep geochemistry, geochronology, paleontology, petrology, paleomagnetism and geophysics, and new disciplines: geomorphology, physical and chemical hydrology, biogeochemistry, low-temperature thermochronology.
 
This evolution is only possible with significant and high-performance technical support which is based on technical and human potential. These technical skills are grouped within 6 technical workshops so as to provide greater efficiency for the benefit of the research programs. These workshops manage the analytical resources, in situ and laboratory experimental devices and resources for field observations.
The technical resources are managed within 6 technical departments:
 
  * Elemental and Molecular Geochemistry  
  * Isotopic Geochemistry and Geochronology  
  * Geomaterials, Sedimentology and Petrophysics  
  * Field Hydrology and Geophysical Imaging  
  * Measurement of the magnetization  
  * Analogical and hydrological modeling.
   
 

    • Examples of technical activities

      This unit is managed by a team of managers and an administrator who provides research support.
