Ongoing Research Project

Initiator of the IODP-France Research Project: Mechanics of repeated reactivation behaviour in large submarine landslides and implications for catastrophic tsunami generation: insights from IODP Expedition 372

Collaboration with Jean-Noël Proust (Géosciences Rennes), Joshu Mountjoy (NIWA, New Zealand) and Ann Cook (Ohio State University, USA)

This project quantifies the key role of sediment type and texture, as well as micro-deformation structures on landslide dynamics. Based on the Tuhaheni Landslide Complex (TLC) study case offshore New Zealand, I'm integrating IODP 372 Expedition dataset (sedimentology, structural geology, physical properties and LWS) with newly acquired XCT scans (at the Ohio State University, USA). The latters allow to identify and to study non-discernible structures at the naked-eye level but also to refine description of sedimentary facies. Later on, I plan to experience 4D (Time-resolved) micro-XCT scanning (at the University of Southampton, UK). These techniques provide 3D-higher-resolution images from scanning while experiencing in-situ deformation and/or failure mechanisms within samples. This new and innovative method is a great opportunity to have access to chronological and mechanical constraints on the TLC submarine landslide deformation and its reactivation behaviour.
