Research Activities

As a Critical Zone scientist, my research activities are directed towards the thin layer sustaining life at the surface of our planet: the Critical Zone. Committed to this integrative concept, I am particularly interested in natural waters which consist in the leading thread controlling the exchanges of energy and matter in the Critical Zone therefore connecting its different compartments (Atmosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Pedosphere and Geosphere). In view of the diversity and spatiotemporal variability of water and solute transfers in the Critical Zone, capturing their dynamics is a major stake that must be addressed in order not to compromise our ability to face future challenges currently arising from global change.

To comprehend the dynamics of water and solute transfers in the Critical Zone, I use the gases dissolved in natural waters since variations in the composition of these widely distributed compounds can be used to determine the origin, the pathways and the timescales of environmental processes. Due to their versatility in terms of nature (stable or radioactive, inert or reactive) and origin (natural or anthropogenic), dissolved gases probably represent the most valuable family of environmental tracers which properties allow me to contribute to the investigation of different research teams on various physical, chemical, biological and geological processes.

My research work consists in providing new tools for the observation, experimentation and modelling of the hydrobiogeochemical dynamics of aquatic environments using dissolved gases. So far, my commitment in the public research enabled me to achieve:

  • The development of an innovative technique for the field high-frequency measurement of natural and anthropogenic dissolved gases (N2, O2, CO2, CH4, N2O, H2, H2S, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, VOCs, BTEX) using a MIMS (Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometer).
  • The design and implementation of original experimentations (groundwater and river tracer tests, high-frequency lake mapping, well-logging, in situ long-term monitoring) using naturally occurring or injected “smart” (inert, diffusive, reactive …) dissolved gas tracers.
  • The acquisition, processing and analysis of dissolved gas datasets using inverse modelling for the determination of the origin of water masses, their residence time, the potential exchanges between different Critical Zone compartments, the solute transport properties and biogeochemical reactions in aquatic environments, and, infer the recorded dynamics of past climates.
  • The diffusion of research findings to the scientific (publications in international journals, communications in international conferences) and non-scientific (dissemination events) communities.
  • A contribution in the formation of students (teaching to bachelor and master students, co-supervision of interns).
  • The implementation of research findings in an analytical and consulting platform (technological transfer) including the communication to the public and private partners (running a stand at the regional water management exhibition).

This ongoing work already contributes to a more thorough understanding of greenhouse gas fluxes, water resources vulnerability, contaminant transport in watersheds, groundwater management sustainability as well as ecosystem services and resilience.
